Sir — This refers to the editorial, “End violent Jat protests” (February 22). It is now becoming apparent that the Jats can hold the ruling Government to ransom and hope to have their demands met. The demand for reservations by the Jats, the Patidars, the Marathas etc is nothing but a backlash to the policy of reservations. Many among the OBCs, SCs, STs suspect protests like these to be the first step towards abolishing reservations, even though the Government has ruled it out. However, even Government jobs are not enough to accommodate the aspirations of those who are already on the reservation list. Ultimately, it all boils down to the state of the national economy. Higher growth and equality in the system alone can cap the rising demand for reservations from newer castes and communities.
