National interest

This refers to the editorial, “Checking radicalisation” (February 4). Union Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh’s outreach to the Muslim community leaders with regards to the growing threat of the Islamic State, is welcome. Prior to it, hundreds of Islamic scholars and clerics, including the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, had issued a fatwa against the Islamic State.

National interest should be of utmost importance as any kind of nefarious activity, by any unscrupulous element, can divide us. The editorial has rightly said that, though a handful of Indian youths joined the Islamic State, this is not something to be smug about, as a small fire can turn into a conflagration if not checked on time. It is also the duty of the clergy to tell the audience during Friday prayers about the verses in the Quran. Nowhere does the Quran preach killing innocents.
