Sir — Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal Khattar was justified in his views that Khap panchayats are useful instruments of society, but his views were rightly criticised for some decisions.
It is unfortunate that it has become an unhealthy tradition for the media to highlight only the negatives, while ignoring the positive ones. The media, by and large has neglected the noble joint initiative taken by many Khap panchayats.
Most importantly, Khap panchayats are fighting against the age-old system of dowry and are also working towards the Prime Minister’s initiative of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’. Efforts are on to restore gender ratio in a State that is notorious for female foeticide.
Mr Khattar should write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for backing Khap panchayats, to legislate provisions wherein ugly exhibition of richness in marriage celebrations may be prevented by law.
