Sir — This refers to the article, “linking caste politics and political suicides”(January 22) by Priyadarshi Dutta. Perhaps every parent will agree with the writer’s suggestion that, instead of indulging in activism, students must concentrate on studies.

The curious case of a young Dalit scholar from Hyderabad, Rohith Vemula, amply demonstrates the ill-effects of misguided minds on the overall behaviour of a student. A chronological analysis of Rohith’s Facebook posts clearly outlines the evolution of a destructive psychology out of an innocent mind.

Organising a beef festival openly in the campus apparently aimed at hurting Hindu sentiments, is reason enough to confirm that Rohith allowed himself to be brainwashed thoroughly by mischievous elements.

Even more painful was the role of immature politicians like Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who, instead of guiding these young minds to concentrate on academics, tried their level best to light a bonfire of the delicate social fabric that we have.

If we want a peaceful, progressive India that is conducive to the healthy evolution and development of our children, we need to judge an act by intention and not by the caste or creed of the doer.
