Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Optimising diaspora asset” (January 15). The idea of using Indians abroad to promote national interest, expressed in the editorial, is valid. But the experience of Indian-origin foreign citizens is a mixed one.
In fact, the idea that India and Indians like to foster on these hapless souls is really amusing. For instance, the issue of giving Overseas Citizen of India cards to the applicants has its own vagaries that cannot be explained; it’s even contrary to international agreements as understood in the UN. Unless these discrepancies are sorted and the Indian-origin diaspora is treated equitably, there will be no success.
