The Supreme Court’s stay on the Centre’s notification allowing Jallikattu is welcome. This traditional bull-taming sport has raised questions on both tradition and cruelty to animals.
We should remember that Jallikattu is a sport that has serious consequences, not only for the participants and to the spectators, but also to the animal (the bull) that is subjected to cruelty. And all of this just for the sake of entertainment!
It should be kept in mind that culture is best rooted in human values than in what has been followed since ages. The world over, such sports are being discontinued/discouraged. They should be banned in India too.
