This refers to the editorial, “After Chennai deluge, the many challenges” (December 4). The deluge in Chennai and its suburbs represents a humanitarian catastrophe of enormous proportions. For the residents of the city, this is the worst disaster in living memory.

In the midst of all the gloom and misery, some people are summoning remarkable reserves of inner strength to cope with their collective suffering. This is a moment when altruism triumphs over selfishness.

The city’s youth deserve a special mention for ‘ferrying’ the helpless flood victims from precarious places to safe places. Various NGOs are also rising to the occasion and supplementing rescue and relief operations through Government agencies.

Moreover, in this hour of crisis, we have witnessed a rare unity between the Government and the Opposition, to mitigate the suffering of the people.
