Wrong decision

This refers to the editorial, “Running behind the stars” (November 17). The Basketball Federation of India’s decision to give a monthly stipend to Satnam Singh Bhamara’s family is strange.

First, the Government or the federation did not have any role to play in the meteoric rise of the young basketball player.  Second, there are many underprivileged young kids who, for want of money or infrastructural support, do not get the platform to showcase their talent.

The editorial has rightly said that the issue is not just limited to the BFI, but other sports bodies as well, as their priority is to just please their political bosses and no one else. This clearly shows that sports federations are least bothered about the development of sports in the country. No wonder, India is hardly considered as a sports nation.
