This refers to the editorial, “Quota-unquota matters” (September 17). Former Minister and leader of the Congress Jitin Prasada’s suggestion to provide quota benefits only for “the most backward castes and poor upper castes” is welcome. He has set a strong ground for national debate.

I concur with the stand that the purpose of reservation, that was enshrined in Article 16, has been consigned to oblivion and replaced by vote-bank considerations. Quota must not be at the cost of meritocracy, but strictly restricted to the ‘most backward classes and poor upper classes’ only; otherwise, it should be allowed to all communities in proportion.
