Sir — This refers to the report, “Death penalty only in terror cases” (September 1). Hanging entails only a moment’s pain, and after that everything ends. It sends a strong message that the criminals will be punished in proportion to the gravity of their crime. So, if death penalty does not work as an effective deterrent, how can a jail-term be more effectiveIJ No criminal is devoid of human emotions. If a criminal is forced to stay in a dark cell, his mind is bound to accumulate all kinds of negative feeling and he will react with vengeance, when released from prison. Thus, he will become a greater threat to society.
