Silver lining

Sir — This refers to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s comment that the electronic media ignored the 1965 event as it was busy covering a murder mystery. Even if the Minister takes a dig at the news channels, it won’t make a difference. The ‘we broke it first’ cries, which reverberate in our drawing-rooms, are driving forces for these useless daily evening shouting events. The moment it is on the one-rank-one-pension issue, the channels send their people to cover senseless sound bytes, when actually the Government is on the job. But there is a silver lining. With television channels busy with trivial stuff, the Government can concentrate on governance.
