This refers to the editorial, “Targeting Punjab again” (July 28). The terror attack in Gurdaspur is a ploy of the Pakistan Army to derail peace talks between India and Pakistan. The attack comes close on the heels of Pakistan’s continuous ceasefire violations along the line of Control. However, after failing to gain substantially along the loC, the Pakistan Army seems to be hell-bent on targeting other sensitive areas along the border.
The terrorists had used a similar modus operandi in the Samba--Kathua region, close to Gurdaspur in March. A stolen car was used and a police station was targeted. Though the Punjab police reacted remarkably well, the casualties could have been reduced by a better co-ordination between the police and the commandos.
The last thing India should do is to abandon the peace talks because New Delhi has always gained from talks with Islamabad by drawing the attention of the world towards Pakistan’sdouble standards.
