Great initiative

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “The skilling challenge” (July 17).  There is no doubt that Skill India has a huge potential to transform our nation and take it to a different platform altogether. As of now, we are known for our cheap labour, but then it doesn't help in the long run as our enormous manpower needs to have proper skills to leverage our potential. Skills will fetch the workforce rewarding jobs. And it is imperative that these skills are imparted only when the youth has basic education in place, because the end objective is to create an army of skilled workforce that can serve in any part of the world.

I completely agree with the editorial that, not only do we need to overhaul the conditions of our ITIs but also change our mindset towards them. Providing skills training to 24 lakh workers within this year, is an ambitious target, hence the effort needs to be monitored properly. A critical stakeholder like the private sector needs to be consulted for Skill India to become a fruitful exercise.
