Welcome step

This refers to the editorial, “The cash to card regime” (June 26). The Government has taken a good initiative to incentivise payments through plastic cards and reduce the use of cash transactions as far as possible. It will be a much-needed relief for our cash-based economy. But we should be ready for some initial teething problems as it will take time to streamline the new thrust and draw a clear roadmap. The Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana is a big step in the direction of financial inclusion, but the Government needs to create infrastructure and communicate clearly to rural India, which is still clueless about the use of plastic money.
The Government has to move a step further and use the Jan Dhan Yojana platform to create awareness among the rural population so that the desired benefits of incentivising can be obtained. I agree that online transactions are not safe enough to encourage a majority of the people to use this option. The Government should take measures to gain the people’s confidence.
