Sir — This refers to the report “Centre sets new norms to protect good Samaritans” (June 6). It is heartening that the Road Transport and Highways Ministry has issued a notification to help and encourage the bystanders who desire to save victims of road accidents without having to deal with police harassment, detention or legal entanglements.
Presently, even a kind-hearted eye-witness is reluctant to help the victim as he is bound to be questioned by the police. The new rule will dispel such fears and the helper will be free to reveal his identity. It will be better if the Government issues a certificate of appreciation, as suggested in the notification, to give a boost to good Samaritans.
