Dynasty politics

Sir — This refers to the article, “Rahul Gandhi is back with a bang, may be” (May 1) by Kalyani Shankar. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was sarcastic in his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is still immature, as his speeches show. Mr Gandhi should reflect on what the Congress failed to do to reduce the plight of the farmers.

After Mr Gandhi became an MP, how many times did he show interest in the farmersIJ Where was his concern — both for the party and the farmers — when he disappeared for six weeks or soIJ His sudden interest in farmers’ suicide is shallow. The truth is that he is politically ambitious for a dynastic throne that was lost last year.

Also, there has been a hectic palace move to project him as the farmers’ champion. This is to see if his acceptance in the party can be improved as there have reportedly been silent revolts against the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty’s hold on the Congress. But leadership acumen comes from political experience, not palace manoeuvres scripted by loyalists.
