Punish motormouths

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Racist, uncouth netas” (April 3). It is disgusting that Bharatiya Janata Party’s foul-mouthed party leaders are making idiotic comments without caring for the embarrassment they bring to their party and the Government. In a party rally before the Delhi Assembly election, Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti’s controversial comment brought trouble for the Government, with the Opposition raising a storm in Parliament demanding the Minister-MP’s resignation. The BJP was even thoroughly drubbed in the election, partly as a result of such crass comments. In disapproving of her remark, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked party workers to be cautious. But his directive has gone unheeded.

Politics apart, it must be conceded that Ms Sonia Gandhi, besides being the president of the main national party, the Congress, is also the country’s most graceful, self-contained, and respected leaders. Union Minister Giriraj Singh has a record of making outrageous comments, but his racial remark against her, which has rightly been condemned by all sane-minded persons, is inexcusable. The Prime Minister needs to do more to discipline his incorrigible motormouths.
