Sir — This refers to the article, “Ridiculing nation’s secularism” (February 13) by JS Rajput. After 39 years of embedding two words like ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ in the Preamble of the Constitution, there is no perceptive manifestation of change in the system and structure of the society and the country. The Constitution has provided freedom of conscience and freedom to profess, practise and propagate any religion. Unlike Western democratic countries, in India religion is not separated from the state.
No religion is allowed to exploit and incite hatred to other religion. This was the status of secularism in our Constitution even before the amendment to the Preamble of the Constitution was done in 1976. We have embraced the policy of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation after 1991.
