Empty assurances

Sir — One finds it difficult to digest the promises made in the Aam Aadmi Party’s manifesto and the 70-point action plan for the Delhi Assembly poll. On one hand, the party’s stand has been anti-industrialist. On the other, its manifesto talks of making Delhi a hub of trade and tourism. The manifesto is almost silent on the means of revenue-generation. Almost all the announcements made in the manifesto are chimerical. For example, just the expenditure on installing 15 lakh CCTV cameras — which the AAP has promised — will be equal to three times the total budget of Delhi. Giving full statehood to Delhi is out of the Delhi Government’s purview.

Interestingly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pooh-poohed freebies by citing at a rally the story of an auto-rickshaw driver. He has indicated clearly that his party does not believe in doles but in good governance. The Modi Government has walked the talk in its eight-month rule. Voters should show the same sensibility by electing a good Government in Delhi which they did in the lok Sabha poll.
