Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Irresponsible conduct” (November 25). The recent arrest of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s close aide Srinjoy Bose has come as a major blow to the Trinamool Congress. The Central Bureau of Investigation’s probe into the Saradha chit fund scam has apparently upset the Chief Minister because many more of her close associates and senior Trinamool Congress leaders are on the verge of being snared by the agency. This has made Ms Banerjee level baseless allegations against the BJP.
The BJP’s growing influence in West Bengal is also a major concern for the Chief Minister. But at a time when her Government is facing charges of going soft on the accused of Burdwan blasts and jihadi elements in the State, her irresponsible conduct and statements will further dent her credibility. Ms Banerjee is also trying to play the secular card which she has used many times. But one doubts if this strategy will help her this time.
