Publicity stunt

Published on:

Sir — As the Indian diaspora in the US comes together on an unprecedented scale to honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is visiting the US after being denied a visa in 2005, it is shocking that a federal court in New York has issued summons against him for his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat violence. This seems to be a publicity stunt.

That the case has little merit or that Mr Modi, as a serving head of Government, has full diplomatic immunity is clearly irrelevant to those who use lawsuits to generate publicity. Such people are equal opportunity haters of India, and they will rally against the country no matter which political party, coalition or individual is elected to power by Indians.
