Kashmir tangle

Sir — This refers to the article, “New shape to Kashmir solution” (September 15) by Francois Gautier. At a time when our effort should be to not destabilise India, but to work for the consolidation of gains made in the past 67 years, what prompted the writer to come out with the solution he has offered and his suggestion of involving Mr Karan Singh, is incomprehensible.

Mr Singh is fully aware of the fact that under Article 370 of the Constitution, the State of Jammu & Kashmir holds a unique position in the Indian Union — a position denied to the other States. It is something short of a sovereign status. It is also the mother of all that presently ails the State. So, why was the author silent on Article 370IJ

Sheikh Abdullah’s successor, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, was a firm believer that Kashmir was an integral part of the Indian Union. Unfortunately, this spirit of political uprightness is missing in today’s political jargon.
