Sir — If the views of Union Minister for External Affairs Salman Khurshid reflect the collective thought of the Union Cabinet, perhaps the Constitution may need to be re-written for making the Supreme Court and the Election Commission elected bodies that are accountable to the ruling party in case the Congress returns to power! It would have done so now if the Model Code of Conduct had not been in force.
The silence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi on the fantastic comments made by Mr Khurshid reflects the lack of accountability of those in elected bodies where the dignity of another institution, the Central Information Commission, is put on hold by political parties that do not enforce the commission’s directive to bring them within the ambit of the Right to Information Act. The President must take serious note of the External Minister’s remark and rebuke him for the irresponsibility. It is futile to expect the Prime Minister to take any action.
