Insensitive remark

Sir — This refers to Central Bureau of Investigation Director Ranjit Sinha’s controversial ‘rape remark’, in which he suggested that being unable to enforce a ban on betting is similar to suggesting that if one cannot prevent rape, he/she should enjoy it. The statement has sparked countrywide criticism and rightly so.
Although Mr Sinha’s view has been justified by his department as having been said in the context of legalising betting in sports, and he too has clarified on it, the comment was in poor taste.
The wounds inflicted on the national conscience after the December 16 gang rape in Delhi are still fresh. Public officials must restrain themselves from referring to the heinous crime out of context. Instead, they should present their opinion through proper channels
