Sir — The interim order of the Supreme Court that makes the Aadhaar card as ‘not mandatory’ to avail the benefits of various Government schemes, is welcome. There have been apprehensions that the card was being issued to immigrants who were illegally residing in the country and being protected for the sake of vote-bank politics. There is merit is this fear.
Also, the Government will be able to save crores of rupees in subsidy bills by confining the direct cash transfer benefit scheme to the criterion of nationality rather than residency.
