Sir — This refers to the article, “Country will pay for Congress’s myopia” (August 6) by A Surya Prakash. With the creation of Telangana, the demand for smaller States will now be almost impossible to stop. This fragmentation will result in the weakening of the Centre. One way to strengthen Central authority and ensure that the unity and integrity of the country remains intact is to amend the Constitution to bring in a presidential form of Government, like which exists in the United States.
If the US with its 50 States, held together by a strong Centre, can tackle fissiparous tendencies, surely so can India.
