A civilian was killed during clashes between protesters and security forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district late on Tuesday when clashes erupted following a search operation in the area.

Sources said security forces cordoned off Ganawpora village in Shopian late in the evening in pursuit of militants but local residents came out to protest against the search operation.  The operation was launched when the residents were busy in preparations for breaking fast of the Ramzan day.

During the clashes a youngster in his early 20s, identified as Adil Farooq Magray, was hit by bullets. He was immediately shifted to district hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

The youngsters clashes with the security personnel apparently to ensure safe passage to militants.

A health official said that Adil was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
