Two women Maoists surrendered before police in Malkangiri district of Odisha close to Chhattisgarh border alleging torture on them by senior Maoist cadres.

Superintendent of Police Akhileswar Singh said Gita alias Jamuna alias Gangi Kunjami, a native of Pattigata village and Saita Pangi surrendered before him at the district headquarters town of Malkangiri. Gita was an area committee member of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist. She surrendered with a rifle while Pangi came without any weapon.

According to Singh, both were involved in several crimes including attack on police stations, loots and arsons. The surrendered rebels had been trained at the rebel camps to handle different types of weapons, he said. The torture and harassment by seniors prompted them to join the main stream. Singh said both the surrendered rebels would be rehabilitated as per Government policy.
