Bihar CM orders probe
In a shocking incident, a woman was stripped and severely beaten up in police presence by some unidentified men late on Wednesday night in a village in Jehanabad district of Bihar allegedly for kidnapping a village youth who was involved with her in a land deal.
The incident created furore as the leaders of political parties raised the issue both inside and outside the State Assembly which, later, prompted the Bihar Chief Minister to order a probe into the incident.
Police said that a middle-aged woman Sangeeta Devi was attacked by some unidentified group of people at village Nizamuddinpur under Jehanabad town police station in Jehanabad after midnight.
The attackers alleged that she was involved in kidnapping of a village youth Shakti Singh alias Chunnu who had a land dealing with her. The villagers also said that Chunnu has been traceless along with his friend Rakesh Sharma.
However, later on Thursday dead bodies of both the traceless village youths were found from Sigori village located on Arwal-Patna districts border.
It was from an SMS sent by Chunnu which had mentioned the name of the woman. The villagers raided her house and severely beaten her before stripping.
Ironically, the incident happened in presence of local policemen and many villagers. In the video footage of a local news channel, the policemen were seen as mute spectators of the incident doing nothing to save the woman from the clutches of perpetrators. Along with Sangeeta Devi three other people too were attacked and injured.
later, all the injured persons, including Sangeeta Devi were admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for treatment.
later, Jehanabad district police chief Aditya Kumar told mediapersons that action would taken against all those people involved in the incident. “It was charged that the woman was involved in kidnapping of a village youth who had some land dealing with her and she was attacked by some unidentified persons. We’ve lodged an FIR in the case and all those guilty would not be spared at any cost,” said the Jehanabad Superintendent of Police.
He also added that the video footage of the incident would be examined by the police to identify the locals involved in the incident. It is also said that the woman was associated with a political party and involved in the business of land dealing with some persons of the village.
Meanwhile, the incident triggered furore both inside and outside the State Assembly as the Opposition BJP leaders demanded immediate action against the guilty policemen while leaders of other parties too while condemning the “ghastly incident” said that law and order situation in the State has now collapsed.
Recently, a disgruntled ruling party JD(U) MlA Rajiv Ranjan had said that ever since his party had joined hands with RJD “crime and criminal incidents in the State has increased by 22 per cent”.
Rajiv Ranjan, a JD(U) MlA from Islampur Assembly constituency in Nalanda had also said that altogether 65 party MlAs were not in favour of joining hands with RJD “as it would bring back the jungle raj in the State once again”.
While raising the Jehanabad issue leader of Opposition Nand Kishore Yadav said that the Government has completely failed in checking criminal incidents in the State. He also demanded immediate action against all those involved into the incident, including the policemen.
“We demand a thorough probe into this shameful incident and action against all those involved into it,” said Nand Kishore Yadav. Senior State BJP leader Shushil Kumar Modi too demanded action into the incident and charged that ever since the JD(U) has joined hands with the RJD criminals have become emboldened in the State.
State BJP president Mangal Pandey attacked the Government saying “it has become deaf, dumb and insensitive Government”.
“Though we keep raising issues of law and order inside the House, the Government does not take any action…they only save their officers and move away...if they are not capable to run the Government they should step down,” said Pandey.
“It is a shameful incident and must be condemned by one and all…action must be taken against all those involved into it, including the guilty policemen,” said Rabri Devi.
