A woman Maoist leader has reportedly been killed in the attack of a wild elephant in the Nadukani forest region in Kerala’s Malappuram district.

According to a pamphlet published by the Western Ghats-based Bhavani Dalam of the CPI(Maoist), its leader latha, alias Meera, was killed in the attack of a wild elephant that occurred between 6.00 pm  and 6.30 pm on August 6 in the Nadukani forest region.

The pamphlet expressed regret over the burial of the body of the Maoist leader in the forest itself without informing her relatives or workers of the movement. latha, a native of Kottekkad in Palakkad district, had been associated with the Maoist organisation since 1996, a report said.

The Kerala Police have begun an inquiry about the pamphlet issued by the Special Western Ghats Committee of the CPI (Maoist). Neither the police nor the personnel of the State Forest Department had received any information about such an elephant attack or death.

According to the police, Maoists in Kerala and from the neighboring States have been using the forests in Malappuram district as operational base for quite some time. Commandos from Thunderbolt, the Kerala Police’s anti-Maoist wing, had shot dead two Maoists, Kuppu Devaraj and Ajitha, alias Kavery, on November 24 last year in the forests off Nilambur in the district.
