Woman jumps off truck to evade alleged rape attempt in Assam

One woman in Assam’s Golaghat district received serious injuries after she tried to escape an alleged rape attempt inside a truck, police said on Tuesday said.

The incident took place on Monday when the woman, a widow in her late 40s, was travelling from her maternal house in Titabor in Jorhat district to Silanijan, some 60 km away in Karbi Anglong district. The woman boarded a bus from Titabor to Golaghat but failed to get a bus from there to Silanijan and instead boarded a goods laden truck.

“I had dropped her at the bus stop at Titabor. She caught a Golaghat-bound bus. Perhaps after reaching Golaghat, she did not get a bus to go Silanijan and boarded the goods-laden vehicle,” family members of the woman told The Pioneer.

“The woman asked the driver of the goods laden truck to drop her at Silanijan. However,  the vehicle did not stop and she jumped off at a bridge near the Nambar Reserve Forest,” police said adding that she was rescued by police in serious condition after being intimated by the locals.

“We are yet to get her statement. She only told us that it was a white colour vehicle and we are probing the matter,” Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police, Debojit Deuri said on Tuesday. “She hasn’t told us anything about rape or molestation attempt on her. Perhaps, the trio had such an intention but nothing happened till the time she had jumped off the vehicle,” Deuri said.

The woman had gone to her maternal home in Titabor on January 15 and was returning on Monday.
