In yet another reminder of fast deteriorating law and order situation in Bengal, a man and his wife travelling from Uttar Pradesh to Alipurduar in North Bengal had to jump off a moving train with his ten-month-old child after a group of drunken youth molested his wife and even tried to rape her.
The victims, who escaped their tormentors’ hands but ended up receiving grievous injuries, are currently recuperating at Alipurduar Railway Hospital. The incident took place aboard a general compartment of Mahananda Express. The couple was coming from Ghaziabad in UP and were to disembark at Alipurduar Junction.
“It was past 10 in the night when a group of about 25 drunken youth boarded the train and started teasing my wife. They molested her and were talking amongst themselves to tie me down and rape her,” Asabul the horrified husband said. The incident took place on Tuesday.
“I was hopelessly outnumbered. It was then when my wife suggested jumping off the train even as we were crossing the Rajabhatkhawa Station,” he said adding they jumped with the child in her mother’s lap and were rescued later on by the RPF.
“Anything could have happened to them as the area falls inside the Rajabhatkhawa sanctuary infested with wild animals,” said a Railway official requesting anonymity.
