The Andheri police on Tuesday arrested seven people in connection with a shocking rape of a 28-old woman who was sexually assaulted when she along with her husband had gone looking for a rental accommodation to Amboli slum in north Mumbai on Monday evening.

After the victim woman lodged a complaint with Amboli police station, the law enforcers registered an FIR and tracked down seven of the eight persons allegedly involved in the incident. They have launched a massive hunt for the eighth suspect, who has been absconding since the incident.

The victim woman, meanwhile, underwent a medical examination at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run Cooper Hospital at Vile Parle, where the doctors certified that she had been gang-raped. “The victim woman is a mother of two children. Her condition is stable now,” a police officer said.

The seven arrested persons were on Tuesday afternoon produced before a Magistrate’s Court which remanded them in police custody till November 4.

"After the incident, the woman and her husband went to the Amboli Police Station and lodged a complaint. The police registered a case against eight persons. Of the eight persons, one has criminal antecedents," Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Dudhe, the Mumbai Police spokesperson, said.

According to police, the victim and her husband were looking for a rented accommodation along with a local resident at Amboli slum. When the couple visited one of the hutments, three of the accused sent the husband out of the house on some pretext and tied him up behind the house and assaulted him. “The accused later sexually assaulted the woman,” the police said.

All the accused persons are in the age group of 25 to 30 years. While one of the accused persons is a history-sheeter, the police are checking the antecedents of others.
