The Kerala Police had so far been depending only on circumstantial and scientific evidences to establish that Assamese migrant worker Ameerul Islam was the killer of the 29-year-old Dalit law student of Perumbavoor but they got a shot in the arm on Monday in their endeavour to solve the case with a key witness, a woman neighbour of the victim, recognising the accused at an identification parade.
The witness identified Islam as the person wearing a yellow shirt whom she had reportedly seen walking away from the victim’s house through the nearby canal on the day of the murder, April 28, at the identification exercise for which the police had paraded along with Islam some other migrant workers with physical features similar to those of the Assam native.
