The Supreme Court on Thursday set a time frame of three months to wind up the trial in one of the post-Godhra riots cases relating to Gulberg Society massacre involving death of Congress MP Ehsan Jafri and 67 others.
The special Bench headed by Chief Justice Hl Dattu expressed concern over the accused kept languishing in jail before directing the Ahmedabad court to avoid any further delay. However, it clarified that the concerned court should not pronounce the verdict. The Special Investigating Team (SIT) probing nine Godhra riot cases was also asked to proceed expeditiously in the case.
Former CBI Director RK Raghavan, heading the SIT, expressed difficulty to finish proceedings within three months. The court gave permission to SIT to approach the Court in case of any difficulty. The apex court has been monitoring nine cases after NHRC and various NGOs alleged the State’s investigation to be shoddy and unreliable.
