Will strengthen cause of justice: New CBI chief

IPS officer Anil Kumar Sinha, who took charge as the CBI director on Wednesday, says he is aware of the challenges facing the agency and would endeavour to strengthen the cause of justice.

The 1979-batch officer of Bihar cadre has taken over as the agency’s reins in the backdrop of a controversial tenure of his predecessor Ranjit Sinha under whose leadership the image of CBI was dented considerably.

He is the second chief of the agency from Bihar cadre after Ranjit Sinha. Sinha’s predecessor AP Singh too was initially from the Bihar cadre but went to the Jharkhand cadre post-Bihar’s bifurcation.

Before the new role, Sinha served as Special Director for 19 months and supervised a number of cases, including Saradha chit fund scam under the Anti Corruption besides other cases from the Economic Offences, Special Crimes and Special Task Force wings.

The new CBI chief has a tough task cut out for him to restore the credibility of the agency which has drawn flak from various courts for shoddy investigation, favouring the high profile accused persons in sensitive cases and manipulation of files at the behest of erstwhile UPA Government. The Supreme Court had even dubbed the agency as a ‘caged parrot’.

Outlining his priorities to the media, Sinha said, "There is no challenge which is small or big. The challenges are an opportunity to do good."

"I accept the responsibility to head the premier investigation agency with deep humility. I am aware of the challenge facing the CBI and would endeavour to work with my team to strengthen the cause of justice and reiterate our commitment to the values enshrined in the motto of the organisation i.e. Industry, impartiality and integrity," he said in a brief statement soon after taking charge on Wednesday morning.
