Taking a cue from the ‘pink chaddi’ campaign that rocked the nation’s consciousness in the wake of the Sri Ram Sene’s attacks on women in pubs several years ago, the Congress party in Goa has decided to gift the State’s PWD Minister a miniskirt in the wake of his comments that wearing the skirts and visitin the pubs was against ‘Goan culture’.
Congress spokesperson Durgadas Kamat told reporters here Tuesday that his party would formally send Dhavalikar a mini skirt to prove that popular party clothes have very little to do with disrespect to culture. “let him see for himself. We are sending him a brand new miniskirt,” Kamat said.
Dhavalikar had on Monday said: “Young girls wearing short skirts in nightclubs are a threat to the Goan culture,” with his comments coming barely days after the State saw a visit of the notorious Sri Ram Sene who also advocated a similar line of thinking.
"This habit of young girls wearing short dresses everywhere does not fit the Goan culture. What will happen to it if this continuesIJ We should not allow this. It should be stopped,” said Dhavalikar, who belongs to a regional party, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, which is in alliance with the BJP.
Muthalik, also assured that he will start an SRS unit notorious for attacking young men and women for drinking alcohol in a Mangalore pub in Goa ostensibly to stop women from wearing short skirts and the “culture of drugs, sex and nudity” and preserve the ‘Indian culture’. The comments have snowballed into a controversy on national media.
Dhavalikar, who is a known Sanatan Sanstha sympathiser and his wife wife Jyoti volunteers for the Sanatan Sanstha a right wing organisation which was one of the hosts of the All India Hindu convention in Goa last week, where Muthalik made the comments.
