Barely a couple of days after a team of Opposition leaders including Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, former UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav and others shot off a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioning the injudicious use of central agencies against Opposition parties, Bengal Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari on Monday wrote a letter to the Prime Minister "expressing concern" over CBI inaction against senior politicians involved in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam.
Alleging that the Chief Minister was the "biggest beneficiary" the Opposition Leader said wondered whether it was the "high post" that was making the central agency hesitant to act against her.
He said that though the CBI was given the responsibility of the investigation, because it was a scam involving thousands of crores collected from the public who stepped into the trap because of the "patronage of people occupying high positions in the system."
Alleging that the chit fund scam started when Banerjee was the Railway Minister in the UPA II government, Adhikari wondered whether the CBI was afraid of the high posts involved in the scam.
Incidentally Kunal Ghosh --- who too was arrested for his alleged involvement in the scam and who is presently the TMC spokesperson --- had on several occasions said that the "biggest beneficiary of the chit fund scam was none other than Mamata Banerjee herself."
