Newly-appointed law Minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Monday said that one of his priorities will be to reduce litigation by Government agencies in courts and weed out obsolete laws. His predecessor Ravi Shankar Prasad who too addressed the media said that he leaves with a “supreme sense of satisfaction” counting the passage of the NJAC Bill as his biggest achievement.
Prasad said that the NJAC Bill, being a constitution amendment Bill, required ratification by 50 per cent of State legislatures. Till date Goa, Tripura and Rajasthan had ratified although Prasad wrote to all States seeking early ratification. Taking the cue from where his predecessor left, Gowda informed mediapersons that fresh communication will be sent to all States requesting them to ratify the Bill at the earliest.
Aiming to reduce litigations filed by one Government agency against other and those involving Centre and states, Gowda suggested that a change was needed in their mindset. While maintaining to continue the initiatives taken by his predecessor, Gowda hinted that electoral reforms was also top on his agenda.
Prasad even counted increase in the strength of judges in ten High Courts among his achievements other than the effort by the Ministry to ensure cases against high profile persons including MPs/MlAs are fast-tracked.
