With Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee having cracked the whip on erring private hospitals for excess billing, extortion, false diagnostic tests and deficient service the Kolkata Police on Tuesday summoned the top management bosses of high-profile Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals for questioning in relation to the death of a patient Sanjoy Roy a few days ago.
Apart from the police action, the State Health Department has also set up a six-member inquiry committee to probe into the circumstances that led to the death of a patient Roy.
The victim’s wife Ruby earlier complained that the hospital authorities forced the family of the deceased to deposit valuable securities including fixed-deposits and other documents to secure release of the patient whose botched treatment cost the family a whopping Rs 7 lakh or so.
The Health Department’s strong steps come in the wake of a hue and a cry and a public warning by the Chief Minister to all the private hospitals against fleecing of the patients.
