A protection wall and adjoining stretch of parking lot at a posh high-rise building at Wadala’s Antop Hill area in north-central Mumbai caved in early on Monday, trapping under its debris at least a dozen vehicles, even as torrential rain claimed at least eight lives in the metropolis and neighbouring Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts.
In a first of its kind rain-related incident, the protection wall and a sizeable stretch of the parking area at the 32-storey lloyd’s Estate collapsed, taking with the sliding concreted portion of the parking lot as many as 12 high-end cars and SUVs and creating a huge crater of the size of 30 to 40 feet.
Such was the gravity of land slide that at least half a dozen vehicles got buried under the debris, thus making it difficult for fire brigade personnel to fish them out from under the debris.
