The Central Bureau of Investigation wants Madhya Pradesh STF to continue its probe for another two months into the Vyapam scam related to 245 persons.
In an affidavit filed before the apex court, the premier investigating agency which took over the probe into the massive recruitment scam from Madhya Pradesh police on July 9, said that it will require six to eight weeks to physically take over all Vyapam scam cases. The matter will be heard on Friday
On July 24, a bench of Chief Justice Hl Dattu and Justices Arun Mishra and Amitava Roy directed the CBI to inform the time it required to take charge over the entire probe and even have its own prosecutors to represent them in court.
As regards prosecutors, the CBI informed Court that six weeks time was needed to depute prosecutors to appear in 20 special courts dealing with Vyapam cases. However, the agency has indicated that staff crunch and acute shortage of prosecutors will require it to demand close to 307 personnel from the Madhya Pradesh Police. These include six top ranking officers of SP level, 20 Additional SPs and 40 Inspectors. In addition, CBI has demanded at least 25 public prosecutors from the state government.
The Court pressed for this information as petitioners led by senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh were not happy to allow STF conduct investigations in relation to 245 persons whose bail petitions or remand applications were expiring this month.
About monitoring of investigation by Supreme Court, the affidavit is silent but the agency is likely to oppose this demand of petitioners as there is nothing so far to show that the probe by CBI is lackingin any respect.
