Visually-impaired boys setting an example in Naxal heartland

It is said that when God keeps someone bereft of something he also blesses for sure with some special quality. This saying could be believed upon after visiting the special Government school for visually and hearing impaired at Dharampur locality of the city.

Two boys, Himesh Barse and Munna Kashyap of the same school, were born visually impaired. However, nature balanced this shortcoming with exceptional brain and intelligence. Even the normal classmates of these boys were jealous of their intellect. Both Himesh and Munna are exceptionally good at studies and equally good at games as well.

Notably, this school which is meant for physically-challenged students was established in 1979 and since then it has been catering the needs of specially able boys in the hinterland of the Bastar region. Presently, there are 100 physically-challenged students in this school. They all are learning to overcome their inabilities and also honing their special qualities and skills to face life.

Ten teachers are appointed to teach them. Free food, accommodation and clothing is provided by the State Government to all the students in school. Munna Kashyap, student of Class IX is very good at sports. He won gold medal in games held for special children at Korba in 2010. The boy is also fond of listening music and aspires to be a teacher. Himesh Barse and Vimala Kashyap both are good at singing, the duo share the dream of Munna becoming a teacher one day. Whereas, playback singer Shanu inspires Himesh.
