The violence has subsided in the troubled Churachandpur district of Manipur where a clash between the security forces and an irate mob erupted since Monday killing seven persons and injuring 20 others even as curfew continued in the troubled district to ensure that the violence does not escalate.
Although there is no report of any fresh violence reported from anywhere in the district on Thursday, yet the tension seems to be simmering, particularly in the Kuki and Naga-dominated hill districts with the agitating people refusing to come to a settlement with the Government over the issue and demanding a separate administrative system for the hill districts of Manipur.
“There is no report of any violence since yesterday. However, curfew has been on to ensure that the situation does not deteriorate further. Security forces had been put on high alert to thwart further violence in the district,” said Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner, l Haokip.
Meanwhile, the 48-hour bandh of the National Highway 39 called by the United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of all Naga tribes in Manipur will started from midnight on Thursday. The UNC has called the bandh in protest against the passage of three bills by the Manipur Assembly on Monday - Protection of Manipur People Bill 2015, Manipur land Revenue and land Reforms (seventh amendment) Bill 2015, and Manipur Shops and Establishment (second amendment) Bill 2015.
