Deputy Speaker of the Assam legislative Assembly Bhimananda Tanti was roughed up by some of the violence-affected people in Sonitpur district of Assam on Thursday for making trivial comments over the recent bloodbath that left 73 civilians dead. The incident occurred at Biswanath area in the district on Thursady, when Tanti, accompanied by former Assam Minister Ripun Bora, were on an official visit to a relief camp in the area.

However, the inmates of the camp, particularly women sought an explanation from him on his recent statement about the violence. Tanti had on Wednesday termed the violence as ‘a mere incident that keeps on happening’. “There have been security arrangements but these kinds of incidents keep on happening. Such incidents have happened in Bangladesh and Pakistan as well,” Tanti had told media on Wednesday.

Although Tanti tried to explain to the angry people and justify his stand, the mob did not listen to him forcing them to escape the area with the help of security forces accompanying the group.
