Amid the growing unrest and protests against the incident of kidnapping and rape of a polytechnic college student for 17 months in Hyderabad, the district administration has swung into action and paid an ex gratia of Rs 50,000 to the girl’s family.
The cheque was handed over to the family by Hyderabad District Collector in the presence of Majlis Bachao Tehreek leader and member of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Amjadullah Khan Khali following the directions of Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission.
The move came even as the protests have spread to the other parts of the State. Demonstrations demanding stringent action against the culprits have become intensified after a series of protests in Hyderabad over the weekend. Students have also taken out protest marches in Zaheerabad and other parts of Telangana.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Zone) Tarun Joshi has clarified that the accused of kidnapping and rape Satyaprakash Singh was in judicial custody since September 6. He said that soon after the girl along with her mother lodged a complaint with the police, he was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. “We have booked case against him under Section 366, 376, 342, 323, and 506 of IPC, and Nirbhay Act 2013,” he said.
Joshi said that the students demonstrating on the issue were not fully aware of the action police have taken in the matter. “I appeal to them not to be misled. Police are taking action with seriousness and in an impartial manner,” he said.
