Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday met Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal Khattar and his two State Ministers and discussed with him at length the complex issue of providing quota to Jats by extensively scrutinising the past precedents.
According to sources, Naidu along with Khattar, Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu and Agriculture Minister OP Dhankar, went through the details of reservation steps taken in the past by various Governments.
The meeting that lasted for one and half hours also scrutinised court rulings on quota and sought to see it in the context of the demand for granting OBC (Other Backward Caste) tag by the politically and economically strong Jat community.
A view to have Jats accommodated in the largely untouched tribal quota is also doing round.
“There would be many more meetings before a firm step could be taken on the sensitive issue... other stakeholders would also be giving their views on it...,” sources said.
Naidu may also meet BJP’s Kurukshetra MP Raj Kumar Saini, who had openly opposed granting reservation to Jats and was issued a show cause notice by the party. He had even threatened to resign if there was “any loss” to reservation quota for the OBCs.
Agitating members of Jat community had attacked and pelted stones at Saini’s residence.
BJP president Amit Shah had earlier constituted a committee under Naidu to decipher the quota possibilities to Jats. The members of the committee, included two Central Ministers Mahesh Sharma and Sanjiv Balyan, BJP vice-president and MP Avinash Rai Khanna and Satpal Malilk.
