UP Energy Minister Claims Hit Job by Employee Leaders, Slams Strikes Over Privatisation

Lucknow, Jul 28 (PTI) — Uttar Pradesh Energy Minister AK Sharma has alleged that he is being targeted by disruptive elements within the electricity employee unions amid continued strikes over privatisation.

A post from Sharma’s office, shared on X and reposted by the minister, accused certain leaders of plotting a “supari” (hit job) against him. It claimed strikes began just days after he took office, and the High Court eventually had to intervene.

“Why aren’t there strikes in other departments?” the post questioned, implying the power protests were politically or personally motivated.

Sharma’s office accused these leaders of misusing the privatisation issue and undermining the work of sincere officers. It also described a recent protest outside the minister's residence as abusive, despite Sharma offering sweets and water and waiting to meet the protestors.

The post further claimed that when Agra’s power distribution was privatised in 2010, the same leaders did not oppose it — allegedly because they went on a foreign tour during that time.

The minister emphasized that privatisation decisions are not taken by him alone and clarified that the entire process is overseen by a task force led by the Chief Secretary and approved at the highest levels of the state government.
