Undivided Andhra will vote for both lS, Assembly polls

The voters in Andhra Pradesh will vote as one to elect Governments in two States. As an undivided State before its bifurcation into Seemandhra and Telangana, undivided Andhra Pradesh will vote both for the lok Sabha as well as the Assembly elections.

While Telangana region votes on April 30, the other two regions of Seemandhra will vote on May 7.  However, while results will be declared on May 16, it will only be after June 2 that the two States will have their Chief Ministers as it is on that day that Telangana officially comes into existence.

Chief Election Commission VS Sampath explained that irrespective of the appointed day for the creation of the new State of Telangana, elections will be held to the lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies as they exist on date. The corresponding lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies would go to the respective states once the bifurcation process of the state is complete.

“If an MlA is elected to any constituency which is part of undivided Andhra Pradesh today, the moment a new state is created, if he is part of Telangana, automatically he/she will become member of the Telangana legislative Assembly,” Sampath explained.

Telangana region will have 17 Parliamentary constituencies and the Seemandhra region 25. Telangana, the country’s 29th state, will be born on June 2 and start functioning from that day.
