Under flak, Maha Govt withdraws security cover of alleged bookie

Within days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the premises of an alleged bookie, a chastened Maharashtra Government has withdrawn police protection given to him and ordered a probe as to how he had been given official security cover. Under severe flak from various quarters for his Government having provided a security cover to an alleged bookie with doubtful credentials, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday confirmed that the police protection provided to  Anil Jaisinghani, who is under the ED scanner for his role in betting racket during IPl matches, had been withdrawn.

Fadnavis said that he had asked the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) a couple of days ago to look into the reasons for providing security cover to Jaisinghani. “With the inquiry underway, the security cover given to the person concerned has been withdrawn,” he said. Among the terms of references prescribed for the inquiry is why Jaisinghani was provided security by the Mumbai police in the neighbouring Thane district.
